FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Do I need therapy?
Answering this question will require some reflection from your side, as only you know the answer. Seeing therapist might help you to: - feel better now by working on something that is bothering you (anxiety, insecurity, self-esteem issues, relationship issues, etc.); - work on a situation from the past to minimise its impact on your present and future life; - prepare to face a future situation or get help to reach a certain milestone. To summarise, if there is something that bothers you and you think you need help with it, seeing therapist might be useful. You can find some further practical tips here.
  • How many sessions do I need?
A completely honest answer is: it depends. Before starting therapy, it is impossible to say how many sessions you need to work your therapy question through. It depends on your question, on yourself, on your environment and life situation, the list goes on. You are free to stop therapy whenever you want or take a break to think about how to continue.
  • What do I need to start therapy?
Most importantly, you need to be motivated to change and you need to invest some time and effort into this. Other than that, you only need a quiet place and a laptop/phone with internet connection to attend the sessions.
  • Am I too busy for therapy?
Normally, a couple of hours a week is already enough to attend therapy sessions and work on new insights in between.
  • Are your therapy sessions covered by health insurance?
My sessions are partially covered by health insurance in the Netherlands. Exact coverage amount and structure depends on your insurance plan and provider (more details here). You do not need a reference from your general practitioner to have my services reimbursed. Getting full coverage in the Netherlands is only possible if you have an official diagnosis from the DSM-5 mental health disorder list supplemented by a reference letter from your general practitioner.
  • How much do your services cost?
An individual session lasts 60 minutes and costs 85 EUR (inc. VAT). Before each session you will receive an invoice, which can be paid by bank transfer.
  • Do you 100% guarantee that I will see improvements?
No. If a therapist guarantees you improvements, do not work with them. Success of therapy trajectory depends on multitude of factors, including yourself, and cannot be guaranteed. It does sound demotivating, but keep in mind that therapy works for most people. The only thing I can guarantee you is that we together will try our best to make therapy work for you, and if we see that it does not work, we think about other options (another therapist, another method, etc.).
  • Do I need any special equipment or software to attend therapy?
You do not need anything special. Everything you need is: - Internet connection; - Laptop or phone with working camera and microphone; - Notebook and a pen if you want to make any notes. I use Google Meet for online therapy sessions. It is a secure videoconferencing software, and you do not need to install any dedicated apps. I will send you a link prior to each session.
  • Do you offer therapy packages?
I do offer therapy packages (see Services). They are optimised for a specific problem that often occurs with my clients. The packages do not have a pre-determined number of sessions, because it depends on the individual situation of each client. After 2-3 sessions, we can usually estimate how many sessions you need.
  • How often do I need to have sessions?
As a rule of thumb, I recommend weekly sessions. This is an optimal frequency to keep the momentum and focus on the improvements, while having enough time to reflect and practice between the sessions. Some clients, especially in the supporting phase of a therapy trajectory, choose for biweekly sessions. They already feel that they can deal with their situation on their own, therefore they need less active interventions and use these sessions as a "reminder" on their chosen course.
  • How to choose a therapist?
Most importantly, you need to choose a therapist you are comfortable with. The personal match between a therapist and a client is an important factor for successful therapy. As a first step, you can pre-screen a personal profile of a therapist before engaging with them, but the most reliable way to figure it out still is simply going for a session or two and figuring it out together. If you feel that there is no match between you and your therapist, do not hesitate to discuss it with them and stop the collaboration. Therapy is hard enough, and doing it with someone you are not comfortable with strongly reduces your chances of succeeding.
  • What is better: online or face-to-face therapy?
Both are equally effective, it mostly depends on your organizational preferences.
  • What about my privacy?
The content of the therapy sessions is strictly confidential between the therapist and the client, except for the cases stipulated by the AVG / GDPR law. For example, when there is very serious cause for concern for the well-being of the client, or that of another person. This is also the case if a serious crime has been or is to be committed. The therapist aims to discuss any potential disclosure of the sessions content with the client before taking any action. If you have a question about your internet privacy while using my website, please check out the privacy policy.
  • What to do if I am not happy with the provided service?
First of all, discuss it openly with me. I am happy to think together on possible resolution. We should be able to resolve most of the issues on the spot. If this unexpectedly does not work out, the official handling of your complaint will be taken care by my professional association NFG as outlined here in line with the Healthcare Quality, Complaints and Disputes Act (WKKGZ). For efficient intake of your complaint, I can help you to get in touch with the applicable NFG official.
